Often overlooked by tourists, Issan, which is the Northeastern plateau comprising 19 provinces, is noted as the center of an age-old civilization dating back to a pre-historic time and a period when the Khmer people ruled the land. Many relics and ruins still stand, attesting to the grandeur of the past. Issan food is famous throughout Thailand with roast Chicken, papaya salad, sticky rice and spicy sausages among others. Some of the highlights to see in Issan are the 3000 year old cave drawings in cliffs near the Mekong river in Udon Ratchathani, and Ban Chiang, which, according to UNESCO is "Considered the most important prehistoric settlement so far discovered in southeast Asia.."
