Ayutthaya is one of the must see destinations for any visitor to Thailand. Located 47 miles (76 kilometers) north of Bangkok, the ruins of this once proud city make a pleasant day trip or overnight stay from the capital. Ayutthaya was the Thai capital for 417 years from 1350 to 1767 when it was destroyed by Burmese invaders. The Kingdom of Ayutthaya reached its peak in terms of sovereignty, military might, wealth, culture, and international commerce in the 16th century when the Kingdom's territory was extended far beyond present-day Laos , Cambodia , and Myanmar . Ayutthaya even had diplomatic relations with Louis XIV of France and was courted by Dutch, Portuguese, English, Chinese and Japanese merchants. The ruins at Ayutthaya are fascinating and highly recommended.
