Silom represents the heart of the older central business district, lined with the head offices of financial institutions, local banks, law firms and multinational corporations. Surprisingly there are also a number of art and antique shops, and some good local bars and restaurants.
Starting at Lumpini Park and running parallel with Sathorn Road, it runs down to almost meet the Chao Phraya River.
During the evening, Silom puts on a different face when one of Bangkok's most famous night markets starts up, selling clothes, watches, DVDs, belts, bags, candles and many other cheap knockoffs along the roadside. Bring your bargaining prowess.
Patpong, also in the area, is better known for its raunchy nightlife Hotels in Silom are Hof go-go bars but also has a number of dance clubs and party places, along with Japanese hostess and karaoke bars around Thaniya.
