Sathorn Road is to finance and business, what Siam is to shopping. It is the fastest-growing business district in Bangkok. This thriving financial hub boasts sparkling skyscrapers housing headquarters of many multi-national corporations as well as banks, embassies, and consulates. Hotels on Sathorn are among the top tier in Bangkok, with more continuously being built.
Sathorn is home to many foreign embassies including the embassies of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Singapore, and Slovakia. (See here for a list of all foreign embassies and consulates in Thailand).
This area is sometimes referred to as " Bangkok’s Wall Street", a fitting enough title considering the fast success of local financial institutions. While the 9 to 5 emphasis is on business and finance, the after-hours scene takes a more laid back turn.
Patpong in the nearby Silom district is Bangkok’s best-known night entertainment district, with a lively night market surrounded by go-go bars that brings tourists of all nationalities and ages out in large numbers and has done so for years.
Hotels in Sathorn are popular with business travelers, and many have superb business and conference facilities. With many multi-national companies having their headquarters on Sathorn Road, many expats live in the area and are catered to with executive serviced apartment hotels, which are also an excellent choice for short term stays, starting from one night.
Executive serviced apartments are in fact one of Bangkok’s best kept secrets. For the same price or less than what you would expect to pay at a 4.5 or five star hotel, you can stay in a full sized apartment, with fully stocked kitchen and up to three bedrooms. Definitely a great choice if you are traveling with family or friends.
Sathorn Road is actually two roads, South Sathorn, and North Sathorn, that run parallel from North-East to South-West. It runs from the MRT Lumpini subway station at the corner of Lumpini Park on Rama IV Road and heads down towards the Chao Phraya River.
Along Sathorn you will also find two of Bangkok's spectacular rooftop open-air bars – Moon Bar, on the 61th floor of the Banyan Tree and Sky Bar on the 63rd Floor of State Tower – both with views and prices that are sky-high.
