Wat Pho, considered to be the birthplace of Thai massage, is one of the oldest, largest and most well-known temples in Bangkok. It also contains a very large golden statue of the reclining Buddha at over forty six meters long. "Wat Pho trained" is a claim you may see at one of the multitude of Thai Massage centers around Thailand, and if the claims of the business in question are genuine, this is a very big deal indeed. Wat Pho is the Harvard of Thai Massage schools and anyone who has actually been trained there, is certain to be a master of their craft.
Wat Pho is also located immediately adjacent to the Grand Palace, so a day out to all of these locations can easily be accomplished at once. It is important to be weary of people who seem friendly and approach with claims of various Temples being closed for repairs, private functions or any other reason. 99% of the time, these claims are totally fictitious and are stated in an attempt to entice tourists to a tailor, gem shop, or something of the sort of commission scam. If this happens to you, you can simply find out the truth by continuing all the way to the temple and finding out there. Also beware of Tuk Tuk drivers in this area, who have honed their crafty ways to a fine skill. It is best to avoid tuks tuks in this area altogether and take a taxi instead.
Also it is important to remember that Wat Pho, like all other temples, is a place of spiritual significance, so proper and respectful dress including tops that cover your shoulders, long pants, and no open-toed shoes is the proper dress etiquette to follow. Inappropriately dressed visitors will either be refused entry or may be asked to wear some of the more modest clothes provided by the temple.
